Facts about YunTech

Originally called “National Yunlin Institute of Technology”, the university was founded in 1991, and Dr. Wen-hsiung Chang was appointed its first president. With the approbation from the Ministry of Education, the university changed its name to “National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech)” on August 1, 1997. Following the retirement of Dr. Chang in 2001, Dr. Tsong-ming Lin assumed the presidency of YunTech. In 2009, President Tsong-ming Lin was appointed Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. Dr. Yeong-bin Yang then took office as the third president. In 2013, Dr. Hou was appointed as its fourth president.

 

At age 22, YunTech is a flagship technological university with four colleges. They are College of Engineering, College of Management, College of Design, and College of Humanities and Applied Sciences. These four colleges account for 20 undergraduate, 28 master and 12 doctoral programs. The student number is approximately 10,000 in total. 64 percent of them are undergraduates and 36 percent of them are post-graduates. Among the distinguished faculty of the university, over 87 percent hold doctoral degrees and 95 percent have reached an assistant professor’s position or above. More than 80 percent of the faculty has extensive experience in industrial sectors. They offer regional services at the following affiliated centers:

1. Center for Regional Industry-Academia Collaboration: offers service to 19 partner universities in Central Taiwan,
2. Emergency Toxic Response Information Center in Central Taiwan: offers service to seven cities in Central Taiwan,
3. Teaching/Learning Resource Center for Vocational Education Institutes in Central Taiwan: offers service to 22 partner universities in Central Taiwan,
4. English Teaching/Learning Resource Center for Technological Universities and Colleges in Central Taiwan: offers service to 24 technological universities in Central Taiwan,
5. Coordinating Center for Student Affairs and Student Counseling for Universities in Central Taiwan: offers service to 32 universities in Central Taiwan, and
6. The Library: is in charge of purchasing online databases in all subject areas for 92 technological universities nationwide

 

Internationally recognized with his academic achievement, President Yeong-bin Yang has been elected fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering and International Association on Computational Mechanics. Under the dedicated leadership of President Yang, the faculty of YunTech exemplify high standards in teaching, research and scholarship. According to the report of the Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council in Taiwan, YunTech was ranked among the top 1% of universities worldwide in 2007 for its ESI recognized papers that had been cited. With respect to tech-transition and R&D areas, YunTech is one of the top universities nationwide. The rankings and recognition of YunTech over the past years are as follows:

 
1. For the “Subsidy Directions for Developing Technological University Paradigms,” YunTech received funding valued at NT$75,000,000, the highest among all technological universities nationwide.
2. For the 2013-2016 MOE Teaching Excellence Project, YunTech receives funding valued at NT$70,000,000 per year, the highest among all technological universities nationwide.
3. Ranked 1st for the 6th consecutive year among all technological universities nationwide at the award-winning contest “It’s Show Time” in 2012
4. Won 92 awards, including 26 golds, 36 silvers, 25 coppers and 5 specials at international competitions in 2012
5. Ranked as the 19th among worldwide universities and the top 50 university in design areas by the 2012 iF-International Forum Design
6. Ranked as the 9th among universities in Asian area by Red Dot Award and selected as one of the most creative universities.
7. Selected as the best technological university for protecting students’ rights in 2012
8. Assessed as an outstanding university for the nineth consecutive year in the industry-academia collaboration category by the Chinese Institute of Engineers in 2012
9. Ranked 51st among the top 100 universities across the Taiwan Strait according to the survey released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2011
10. Selected as the outstanding school in the 2nd consecutive year at the category of the Student Labor and Outstanding Service, and Friendly School by MOE.
11. Authorized by the MOE as one of the universities to have its own council of faculty promotion.
12. Ranked the top with the “Outstanding Performance of Industry-Academia Collaboration” and evaluated as the top university in the “efficiency of intellectual property licensing and the profits it produced” category for its 5th consecutive year from 2006-2010 by MOE.
13. One of the two Taiwanese technological universities selected in ESI from 2007-2011 and ranked among the top 1% of universities worldwide in 2007 for its ESI recognized papers been cited. The average number of published SCI, SSCI and EI papers of YunTech faculty is 1.7.
 

YunTech offers a comprehensive selection of curricula that is outcome-based, focuses on effective PDCA management, and aims to hone students’ skills in academics, leadership and public service. In addition to a comprehensively designed coursework, YunTech actively promotes the “Student “1+4” Program” and encourages students to take the challenge of global competitiveness by obtaining professional certificates, enhancing their English proficiency and information technology competence, as well as increasing extracurricular activity experiences. All these opportunities are provided on campus to help students identify their strengths and enhance their competitiveness in the workplace. Over the past years, students have performed outstandingly at both domestic and international competitions. Their achievements are as follows:

 
1. Won 2 gold, 8 silver, 3 copper and 1 special awards at the Seoul International Invention Fair 2012.
2. Won 2 silver and 2 copper awards at “Idea-Inventions-New Products” (iENA 2012) held in Germany.
3. Granted with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 copper medals at The World Genius Convention, Tokyo, Japan. 
4. Won 1 special gold, 2 gold and 6 silver awards at “International Warsaw Invention Show 2012.”
5. Granted with 6 gold, 4 silver and 2 copper medals at International Salon of Inventions and New Technologies in 2012
6. Won 3 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals at Taipei International Invention Show and Technomart in 2012.
7. The group teamed by faculty and students of Department of Visual Communication won 7 awards at the category of “Design Concept” in Red Dot Design Award in 2012.
8. Granted with 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze and 3 special medals at “Macau International Innovation Competition” in 2012.
9. Granted with 1 gold and 1 silver awards at the 27th INPEX in 2012.
10. Won 3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze awards at 2012 Inventeco.
11. Won 2 silver and 4 bronze awards at ITEX 2012 Malaysia-23rd International Invention Innovation & Technology Exhibition.
12. Won 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze and 1 special awards at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2012.
13. Won 1 gold and 1 silver awards at Moscow International Salon of Inventions and Innovation Technologies.
14. The Department of Industrial Design won 2 awards at the 2012 iF International Forum Design.
15. Yen-hen Rei, the doctoral student of Department of Electrical Engineering, was granted with an award at the “8th Outstanding Award of Technological and Vocational Education.” Jun-houn Wei, Wen-fang Chau, Ying-chien Chen and Chien-chien Ye, students of Department of Visual Design, were granted with an awards at “Outstanding Inventor Award.”
16. Granted with the most medals in total. YunTech won 16 gold, 24 silver, 9 bronze and 4 special awards at international innovation competitions in 2011.
 

Through the university’s traditional and core values, “Sincerity, Honor, Perseverance and Originality”, YunTech fosters students into professionals who have knowledge-management ability, are internationally competitive and place an equal emphasis on humanities and technology. It is ready to nurture individuals who are inspired by innovative ideas and engage in ethical conduct and compliance when completing tasks. By having successfully promoted its teaching and research and developed its e-campus as well as cooperation with industries, YunTech has connected itself to the global village for its faculty, staff and student body. YunTech will keep promoting its role to be recognized worldwide, thus becoming one of the world’s top universities focused on theory and practice and also on technology and humanities.

 

YunTech is situated on a campus spread over 58 hectares that is well landscaped with trees, flowers and green lawns. It provides an environment that is favorable to scholarly work and study. The library totals 16,529 square meters and already has 2,210,000 volumes in its collection. It is also in charge of purchasing online databases in all subject areas for technological universities nationwide. In order that faculty and students can get connected to the world easily and obtain necessary resources for their research, teaching and learning, an on-campus Internet system has been established and offers a wireless network that envelops the campus and provides Internet and network access on the go.

 

Separated from the learning area, the school dormitory consists of 15 buildings and offers 2,718 beds in total. Inside each building a “consulting room” is established to help students with disabilities adapt to campus life. Students are offered 4 on-campus dining locations which operate under the supervision of YunTech’s Dining Services Committee and the Health Section of the Office of Student Affairs. Fifteen hectares of the school’s grounds are used as recreational space. Various indoor and outdoor facilities are arranged for open recreation and intramurals. In 2006 YunTech was the first technological university to hold the National Universiade Sport Games.

 

With respect to international cooperation, the number of international students enrolled at the university has been rapidly increasing, and they currently occupy 3.5% of the university’s student population and memorandums of agreement with 169 foreign universities were signed with which it operates university-to-university exchanges. YunTech has been also encouraging each department to be accredited by the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and has become a successfully internationalized university with eight departments having earned professional accreditations. These departments accredited by IEET include the Departments of Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Safety Health and Environment Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Construction Engineering, Computer Science and Information Engineering, and Industrial Management.

 
With respect to cooperation with industries, YunTech has been promoting the Teacher “3+1” Program by encouraging teachers to work or do research in industrial sectors after their third year of teaching on campus so as to improve their practicum and help upgrade the industry. Thanks to its faculty’s efforts, YunTech has always come out first in various evaluation surveys such as “Teaching Excellence”, “Industry-Academia Collaboration”, “Certificate Education”, “Research & Invention” and “Outstanding Achievements”. According to the Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwan, the average annual funding received for the industry-academia collaboration is approximately NT$2,000,000 per teacher.
 

At the age of 22, YunTech has built a solid foundation for academic and professional development. In the future, it seeks to keep promoting its role to be recognized worldwide and become a research/teaching driven university focused on innovation and design, international cooperation as well as industry-academia collaboration.
