* President's Welcome
   Welcome to National Yunlin University of Science and Technology.
  Y. B. Yang, Ph.D.  Y. B. Yang, Ph.D.

Welcome to National Yunlin University of Science and Technology!

I am extremely proud of our outstanding faculty, students, administrators and staff as well as the important role our university plays in the technological and industrial field.YunTech is a relatively young higher education institute, but, with the efforts of two former presidents, faculty, staff, and student body as well as the support of local government and neighboring community, it has earned excellent reputation, focusing on theory and practice combining technology and humanities.The University places equal weight on teaching and research as well as existing duties and service. Special attention is given to industrial collaboration, design and innovation, and international joint programs.Everyone, including alumni and families, is welcome to offer their precious opinions and suggestions. We will continuously improve our facilities and administrations and strive to elevate YunTech to a top-ranked world university.Whether you are studying on campus or visiting us through this site, I hope you will enjoy your stay or visit.

Y.B. Yang,

President

  Dr. Y. B. Yang was appointed in 2009 as President of the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, also known as YunTech, located at the geographical center of Taiwan. He got his Ph.D. degree from Cornell University in 1984. He is Distinguished Professor (on Leave) of the National Taiwan University (NTU) and President of the following two societies, Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) and Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM). Previously, he was President of the Chinese Institute of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering (CICHE) (2005-09) and Chinese Society of Structural Engineering (CSSE) (1998-2000). During his service at the NTU, he was Chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering (1995-98) and Dean of College of Engineering (1999-2005) of NTU.

Currently, Dr. Yang is member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is also Fellow of the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The following are the major awards and honors he has received for his academic achievements: Distinguished Research Award, National Science Council (1988-98, five times); Outstanding Teaching Award, Ministry of Education (1994); Outstanding Scholarship, Foundation for Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship, chaired by Nobel Laureate Dr. Y. T. Lee (1998-2003); C. C. Tzong Chair Professor, College of Engineering, NTU (2007); Munro Prize, Engineering Structures journal (2003); Best Paper Award, Advances in Structural Engineering, an International Journal (2005); and Tsuboi Award, IASS Journal (2008).

His area of interest is centered on the nonlinear behaviors of space frames, vehicle-bridge interaction dynamics, and vibrations of soils and buildings caused by the passing trains, as revealed by the following three books he published with his former Ph.D. students:

(1) Theory and Analysis of Nonlinear Framed Structures, Prentice-Hall 1994, 612 pages;
(2) Vehicle-Bridge Interaction Dynamics – with Applications to High-Speed Railways, World
   Scientific, 2005, 530 pages;
(3) Wave Propagation for Train-Induced Vibrations, a Finite/Infinite Element Approach, World
   Scientific, 2009, 471 pages.

Dr. Yang has also published over 150 referred journal papers and some 300 conference papers and technical reports. Currently, he is Editor of the following two journals: International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics and Interaction and Multiscale Mechanics, an International Journal.
